Exploring Intimacy in Art

By Veronica Blanco………

Love, it’s a grand and feeling that is seemingly impossible to define. Yet we see it everyday around us either on the subway, in films or among our friends and family. It’s a subject that fascinates me as there is so much room to explore; from the intimate moments after work, the passionate moments at night and even the struggles and frustrations. We have all experienced it and I’m safe to say we are all fascinated by it.
My name is Veronica Blanco, I’m a visual artist and my artwork examines love and relationships. I’m inspired from personal moments, the people around me and films. Whichever moment or embrace that interests me, I try my best to depict with paint. The figures in my paintings are a representation of all couples as I want everyone to relate to my work.
It’s difficult to explore love in artwork without being offensive. Earlier in my career, my paintings had to be taken down from display just after a day it was up. Some people were offended by my artwork and deemed it too explicit. Any painting where it looked like “something was about to happen” had to be removed. Out of the 13 paintings that were up, a total of 11 were taken down. What I paint is only natural and beautiful, our bodies are gorgeous they are a wok of art in itself and we should not be ashamed of them. Although I was disappointed to have them taken down, I was also amazed that people were so offended by my art that they asked to take it down. It’s rewarding to have my art evoke such a strong reaction, whether positive or negative. I believe that any good artwork is one that evokes emotion.
Yet on the other hand, I’ve also been praised by my online audience. I’ve had clients mention how my work has brought a sense of tenderness and Tantra energy into their home. It’s interesting because only until recently I’ve been looking into tantra. I do see the relation, my work heavily deals around connection and intimacy. I paint tender and slow moments between couples where the figures in my paintings dissolve into each other.
At the end of the day I paint for myself and will continue to explore this this topic. Some may say that my art is too explicit, some may love my work and some may even nominate my work for awards. Whatever the response, any reaction is great. I enjoy working in this subject matter, I found a topic that I am fascinated with, provides so much room to explore and quite frankly, I think we are all a romantic.
